P9 L!brary's 2nd annual Poetry Slam is this Friday, May 7th!
We want EVERYONE to participate this year! Bring a poem YOU have written, and read it out loud, with feeling. Poets will be judged on the quality of their writing and on their performance.
Last year's slam was a ton of fun and showcased some amazing writing. Some poets were confident; some were so scared they were shaking, but got up the courage to share their work. So even if you're nervous about your poem, even if you don't like performing - sign up anyway! You'll be glad you did.
Winners will recieve gift cards. All poets will get a small participation gift.

New Books!
New Books are in! Graphics and manga, Wimpy Kid, Pokemon, Spongebob, skateboarding, magic, TONS of realistic fiction, and more! Come in and check some out today.
If your class hasn't been visiting the library, bug your teacher! Tell him/her how much you want to come - and show that you deserve to come by working on your behavior. The library is open for lunch most Tuesdays and Thursdays, and there are several other Open Access periods throughout the week. During OA, you can't play games, but you can come in to borrow books, read, or work on a school project, just as long as you have your teacher's permission.

Welcome Back!
Welcome back to another fabulous school year! I am looking forward to working with all the classes, helping with projects and finding great books for independent reading. We'll be ordering new books soon, so if you have suggestions for books you'd like to see in the library, get your requests in ASAP!
Don't forget to have your permission slip signed so you can borrow books - even if you had one signed last year, you will need an new one in order to be able to borrow again.
Library Lunch will be starting again next week! The library will be open 2 days a week during student lunch periods. Come in, use a computer, curl up with a book, draw, or just hang out. You must be escorted by a para or have your teacher call the library at 3061 to give you permission. Computer rules and behavior rules must be followed!
September is Library Card Sign-Up Month! My goal is to have all the 8th graders signed up for a library card from their local public library this month, and everyone in the school signed up by the end of October. If you are 13 or older, you can do it online and have your new card mailed to your home. If you are younger, you will have to get a parent to accompany you to the library to sign up for your card. We have a lot of books in the P009 Library, but your public library has even more - if you can't find it here, try your local branch. They can even order books from other branches for you if you ask.
A lot of reading activities will be taking place this year - 8th graders will be participating in a book discussion group meeting once a month. If students in the younger grades are interested, we can pick a book and start another book club in the library. Get caught reading at dismissal and you'll get a prize! Write 5 book reviews and get an invitation to a special event in the library. Let's work together to make this an amazing year filled with amazing books.

Go Green!
This summer everyone is going green! In the library, we are saving paper by writing on the computers, turning off lights and air conditioners when they're not being used, and re-using everything we can! To help all the classes out with their projects, I've put a lot of great books on display, including a whole shelf full of craft guides - now instead of throwing away "junk", we can make it into art!
I will also be posting Go Green links on the home page of our online catalog.
Don't forget about your public library this summer! Using the library is a great way to go green - borrowing books and magazines instead of buying them saves paper. All your local libraries have activities for summer reading, and their theme is "Be Creative".

The school year is coming to an end, and I want to wish everyone a safe, happy summer, filled with books and reading! It's been proven that kids who read over the summer do better on school exams in the fall than kids who put down the books after June 26th. Do yourself a favor, and do some reading for fun.

Slam!
Thanks to all the participants, our first ever P9 Poetry Slam was a HUGE success! Congratulations to grade 5-6 winner Brynda Terry and grade 7-8 winner Naliek Garrett, and to all the students who wrote amazing poems and were brave enough to stand up and read them. All the poems were excellent, and the judges had a hard time making our final decisions. Special thanks also to judges Officer Roberson and Coach, and organizers Mr. LaScala and Ms. Weinstock. It was a terrific morning, and we will definitely hold another slam next year!

POETRY!!
Poetry month is techically over, but the poetry celebrations continue. Our first poetry slam will be held this Friday, May 8th, in the library. Anyone is welcome! To participate, you must bring an original poem and be willing to read it out loud. Poets will be judged on their writing and performance. Two winners will be chosen -one from grades 4-5-6 and one from grades 7-8. Each winner will recieve a $50 gift card! A workshop will be held on Thursday at 10:25 for anyone who wants help with composing their poem.
